Suzanne Vega is an American singer-songwriter renowned for her distinctive voice and insightful lyrics. Born on July 11, 1959, in Santa Monica, California, she moved to New York City during her early childhood. Vega began writing poetry at the age of nine and composed her first song at fourteen. She attended the High School of Performing Arts, focusing on modern dance, and graduated in 1977.

In 1985, Vega released her self-titled debut album, which received critical acclaim and achieved platinum status in the United Kingdom. Her 1987 follow-up album, "Solitude Standing," featured the international hits "Luka" and "Tom's Diner." The latter song gained additional fame when remixed by the British duo DNA in 1990, becoming a Top 10 hit in multiple countries.
