In the ruined Chernobyl Nuclear Station, after an explosion in the core of the ruins, a scavenger guard team infiltrates the Core and fight toward the Pulse Device in the burning core. They are attacked by creatures that have been mutated by radiation. There are blinding pulses of light. The entire room is warping from radiation. In a climactic battle, the guards use a pulse disruptor to overload the mutants internal systems. One soldier guard sacrifices himself to detonate the core manually. (The mutants shriek, disintegrating in a burst of anti-light:1.9). The entire chamber collapses. Only a few guards survive. The station is collapsing. As the guards ascend the surface tunnels, they discover more mutated humans, but these seem dormant, almost peaceful. The surviving guards must decide: escape or destroy the last remnants of the Pulse Device and doom the mutants forever. (The guards' leader sets off a small nuclear device, destroying the station in a nova of white flame:1.9).
