In 2154, Earth is overpopulated, diseased, and heavily polluted. The planet's citizens live in extreme poverty. In contrast, the rich and powerful live on Elysium, an orbiting space station just outside Earth's atmosphere, with luxuries including medical devices that can heal any disease or condition. Spider, a hacker living in Los Angeles, runs a space shuttle operation to smuggle people into Elysium for treatment.
